Life in a Mission

Learning about the Texas missions by converting our classroom into one.    Students took a vow of poverty, obedience, and silence as they learned how the Native Americans lived in the Missions.

Where's Ms. Madrid?

Hello everyone.  Just wanted to let everyone know that I won't be at Bonham for the rest of the week.  I'll be at Bamberger Ranch with our sixth graders!  Don't worry, your kids will be in good hands with our student teachers and Ms. Parker, middle school teacher.   I'm excited to have more stories to write about and tell the kids all about it!  Also the Hispanic Heritage Project is due on Friday!  Have a Wonderful week!

Reading Homework

Students received their reading homework logs today.  Students are to be reading on a daily basis with a reading goal of 100 minutes or more of reading a week.  We will be increasing that goal every 9 weeks or so.  The Reading Log should be turned in every Monday for a grade and it must be signed by a parent.  Please let me know if there are any questions on this.

I am glad to be in fourth grade, not only because my teachers are nice, but because we are having pure reading time!  I am obsessed with reading.  I read a lot every day!  At home I read books of fantasy and history and lots more.  I am excited to get to read a lot in fourth grade.  It is going to be so much fun1

I LOVE READING !!!

First Week

We had a wonderful first week of school!  We went over rules and procedures and the students did very well!  The kids seem very excited about us starting the Reading and Writing Workshop!  For Social Studies we will continue learning about Texas Symbols and begin learning about Texas Geography!

I am extremely excited about working with the kids this year and inspiring them to discover, question, think and be excited about learning.  Our Core Values are Leadership, Honesty, Integrity, Curiosity, and Respect! We will be talking about these Core Values and we will be looking for students who are exhibiting these throughout the day!

Today I gave the students their first spelling homework names Tic-Tac- Toe.They will be having a  pre-test at the beginning of every week.  Students will only practice those words which were incorrect in their pre-test for homework.  If they receive a 100% on the pre-test they will not have to do their spelling homework.

It is the student's responsibility to make sure that they are reading and writing on a daily basis and that they are working on spelling words and patterns for the week.

We will be contacting you all soon so that we can have a beginning of the year conference to go over any questions or concerns which you may have.  We will be sending home notices with your children as to when we can meet and go over goals.

Why Superheroes for the theme?  The answer is simple:  DEDICATION, SERVICE AND SELFLESSNESS!   We were going to have a "Construction" type theme this year due to all the construction going on, but changed our mind when a really special person passed away right before we had to come back to school.  His name was Jonathan Vela, better known as Aquaman!  I met him four years ago when I was with a group of women starting out as a social/service member.  When I met him we became friends instantly, which was the case with mostly everybody he met.  It was as if we had known each other for many years.  We saw each other a couple of times more throughout the years, but mostly kept in touch through Facebook.  I always admired his dedication towards causes such as Alzheimers, Autism, Heart Disease, etc. He would go visit terminally ill children dressed up as Aquaman and read comic books to them. His group would also donate comic books to children in hospitals.  I contacted him last year because I wanted Student Council to join him in his cause but Life got in the way and I was never able to include Bonham with that service!  I was extremely saddened when I heard the news of Jonathan's passing and the first thing that crossed my mind was the post he had made earlier about how excited and happy he was that he would be a first year teacher as he was hired to teach Social Studies!  I knew instantly that he would be everyone's favorite teacher and he would definitely make it interesting and fun!  Unfortunately he passed away before he had the chance to experience the pleasures, rewards and even challenges of being a teacher.  When I told the teachers at Bonham they were all on board for dedicating their year of teaching to Jonathan.  We would like to tell the kids about service and selflessness and maybe even do several projects throughout the year which were near and dear to Jonathan's heart.  I hope you also join me in supporting us this year with this endeavor, we are all looking forward to it!  Jonathan was a true hero to many and his legacy lives on!

Classroom Set Up

Here are a few pictures that I took of the before and after of the classroom!  I always have so much fun setting up the room and decorating it with the theme for the year!  I hope the kids will love it!  Friday was Meet the Teacher Day at Bonham and I had a wonderful time meeting my students!  I am excited for what this new year has to offer and I can't wait to get started. I'd like to thank my wonderful son who gave me so many ideas and my student teachers as well for all of their help!  :)
